Messages trickle in through the Israeli phone network—fragments of information from within Jenin's refugee camp. "I don’t dare go on the roof, in case I’m shot," one resident confides, speaking anonymously. He describes the camp as eerily quiet, with empty streets and scarce information. Most residents are elderly or children; the younger ones left before the army arrived, leaving those who couldn’t escape to face the uncertainty.

Jenin, now the focus of global attention, has been plunged into a media blackout. The Palestinian phone network was down for much of the day, with the telecoms company blaming the Israeli military operation. The resident I speak with mentions that his family still has water and electricity, and a small shop nearby remains open, selling essentials under the constant drone of military aircraft. As we talk, sporadic gunfire echoes from the camp.

"Yes, I heard them too," he says, noting the intensified drone activity. As we speak, an armoured bulldozer rumbles towards one of the camp’s main entrances, the deserted road baking under the afternoon sun. Last night, explosions and gunfire shattered the peace for a few hours, but today has been strangely quiet—no signs of house-to-house searches or fighters in his neighbourhood. "It’s abnormally quiet," he remarks.

The army has sealed off the camp since its arrival before dawn on Wednesday, as part of a wide-reaching operation across several areas of the occupied West Bank. Jenin camp, home to both armed Palestinian fighters and unarmed civilians, has seen intense gun battles in recent months as Israeli forces conducted repeated raids in search of militants.

Army vehicles are stationed around two of Jenin’s main hospitals. Ambulances are halted as they approach, forced to reverse by curt instructions broadcast in Arabic from army Jeeps. We watched as paramedics were ordered to open the back doors of their ambulance, revealing its contents. Two female patients were also made to exit the vehicle and present themselves to the soldiers.

 অধিকৃত পশ্চিম তীরের বেশ কয়েকটি এলাকা জুড়ে বিস্তৃত অভিযানের অংশ হিসেবে সেনাবাহিনী বুধবার ভোর হওয়ার আগে থেকে ক্যাম্পটি সিল করে দিয়েছে।  জেনিন ক্যাম্প, সশস্ত্র ফিলিস্তিনি যোদ্ধা এবং নিরস্ত্র বেসামরিক উভয়ের বাসস্থান, সাম্প্রতিক মাসগুলিতে তীব্র বন্দুক যুদ্ধ দেখেছে কারণ ইসরায়েলি বাহিনী জঙ্গিদের সন্ধানে বারবার অভিযান পরিচালনা করেছে৷

 জেনিনের দুটি প্রধান হাসপাতালের চারপাশে সেনাবাহিনীর যানবাহন অবস্থান করছে।  অ্যাম্বুলেন্সগুলি কাছে আসার সাথে সাথে থামানো হয়, সেনাবাহিনীর জিপ থেকে আরবি ভাষায় প্রচারিত কর্ট নির্দেশাবলীর দ্বারা উল্টে যেতে বাধ্য হয়।  আমরা দেখেছি যখন প্যারামেডিকদের তাদের অ্যাম্বুলেন্সের পিছনের দরজা খোলার নির্দেশ দেওয়া হয়েছিল, এর বিষয়বস্তু প্রকাশ করা হয়েছিল।  দুজন মহিলা রোগীকেও গাড়ি থেকে বের হয়ে সৈন্যদের সামনে হাজির করা হয়েছিল।
